Abstrak

Background: In the globalized healthcare sector, nursing students are increasingly required to possess strong English oral communication skills. Despite the urgency, many students encounter psychological barriers, specifically communication apprehension and a lack of self-confidence, hindering their professional interaction in clinical settings.

Objectives: This study aims to investigate the relationship between self-confidence and oral communication proficiency in Nursing English among second-year nursing students, and to determine how self-perceived confidence acts as a predictor for clinical speaking performance.

Methods: This research employed a cross-sectional correlational design. Using a total sampling technique, 105 fourth-semester nursing students from the College of Health Science of Husada Jombang participated. Data were collected using a validated 20-item Self-Confidence Questionnaire (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.85) and an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)-based oral communication test assessed by two independent raters. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation via SPSS version 26.0, chosen because the data met the assumptions of normality and linearity.

Results: The descriptive analysis revealed a mean Self-Confidence score of 72.45 (SD = 9.12) and a mean Oral Communication Proficiency score of 76.10 (SD = 8.45). The normality test using Kolmogorov-Smirnov showed that data were normally distributed (p > 0.05). The Pearson correlation coefficient was $r = 0.684$ with a significance value of $p = 0.000$ (p < 0.05), indicating a strong positive correlation. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) was 0.467.

Conclusion: There is a strong and significant positive relationship between self-confidence and Nursing English oral communication proficiency. The findings imply that integrating psychological interventions and confidence-building simulations in the Nursing English curriculum is essential to enhance students' clinical communication readiness.
