THE EFFECT OF BREAST CARE ON BREAST ENGORGEMENT AMONG IN POSTPARTUM MOTHERS AT AULIA GENERAL HOSPITAL, BLITAR REGENCY

Abstrak

Background: A common problem for breastfeeding mothers is breast milk engorgement. According to the WHO in 2021, 36.12% of breastfeeding mothers experienced breast milk engorgement. One contributing factor is increased prolactin hormone levels. Breast milk engorgement can be prevented through proper breast care.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of breast care intervention in reducing breast engorgement at Aulia General Hospital, Blitar Regency.

Methods: The research design was the one group pretest-posttest design without using a control group. The number of research samples was 25 respondents using the Total Sampling method. The research instrument used a demographic data questionnaire, breast care SOP and breast engorgement observation sheet. The intervention was carried out for 2 days, twice daily, by health workers. Data analysis used the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test.

Results: The statistical test results obtained a p value = 0.001 where p <0.05 alpha, wich indicated that before treatment 56% were in the moderate engorgement category and 44% were in the severe category. After treatment, 100% of breast milk engorgement was absent. The analysis concluded that breast care had an effect on breast engorgement in postpartum mothers at Aulia General Hospital, Blitar Regency.

Conclusion: Based on the research results and discussions conducted regarding the effect of breast care on breast milk engorgement in postpartum mothers at Aulia General Hospital, Blitar Regency, it can be concluded that 100% of postpartum mothers were categorized as having no engorgement after receiving breast care intervention.
